Lower your cholesterol naturally with AVOCADOS

In the LA Times Health section this morning there was a little snippet about avocados and cholesterol.  Though I am not a huge proponent of cholesterol lowering drugs for healthy individuals* (people not suffering of heart disease), if you do want to naturally lower your cholesterol, avocados appear to be a great helper.

Avocados have been shown to lower the bad cholesterol (LDL) by as much as 17% and increase HDLs by 11%.

Avocados appear to also be helpful in lowering blood pressure, and help fight cancer.  To learn more about the positive effects of avocados, click here for more information.

 * Regarding the use of statins (cholesterol lowering drugs):  I have many patients who come to my office and are put on statins by their doctors to lower their cholesterol, so I did some investigation and found out that statins are helpful for people who are suffering from active heart disease or have previously had a heart attack (usually older individuals).  I was UNABLE to find any evidence that statins have helped (decreased morbidity or mortality) the healthy population who just happen to have a "high cholesterol" count. So if you are in your 20s, 30s or 40s and you are taking statins, you might want to talk to your doctor about why you are on them.
