Staying young and active after 40

Newton's first law States that: "An object at rest remains at rest, or if in motion, remains in motion at a constant velocity unless acted on by a net external force".  How do we apply this to the human body? It seems that as we get older, there is an internal force that slows us down and makes us weaker. An no matter who you are, being a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, this applies to you.  But to what degree, that is the question. Why do some of us keep going and accomplish things that other people our age or younger can't do? MOTION. Because we keep MOVING.

At 42 years old, and with multiple injuries, I want to keep going, and I work hard at it. I think partially this is the reason I got into chiropractic. As soon as I received my first chiropractic adjustment, it made sense. Not only that, the healthy and active lifestyle that I saw as a patient of chiropractic really resonated with me.

An object in motion remains in motion... a body in motion remains in motion....

I train about 3-5 times per week. Now, I don't train for too long. Each work out session is about 40 minutes, unless I'm surfing, then it's probably more. But I've been doing it now for a long time. In fact, my body and mind crave exercise. They demand it.

Just about a month ago, at the ripe age of 42, I got to surf some of the biggest waves of my life, with sets coming in at about double overhead. I've been surfing for a long time, and I was surprised at the comfort level I had in the water, as I don't get to surf those size waves regularly in Los Angeles.

I can only attribute this to the routine training, stretching, breathing exercises, and yes, eating as healthy as I can (though not perfect! :).  I call this the chiropractic lifestyle (and yes, I get checked and adjusted at least once a week).  I often talk to my patients about it, as the work we need to do goes beyond the time we spend together at the office.  It goes home with you, it goes to work with you.

And I don't care how old you are, it's never too late to start.  Changes can occur at any stage in life, at any age, and at any fitness level.

As one of my teaches in school used to say, motion is lotion.  I like to say movement is life. The more you move, the more life you have. So have a lot of it.  Below are some photos of me surfing in in El Salvador last month. I still have the "stoke" of those waves in me. I hope you find your own stoke for living.

If there is anything we can do to help you keep moving, and moving pain free, please let me know.
